For Bishop Seabury girls basketball’s second-year head coach Tayler Boese, it’s all about building on the little things.
“We are just working on the fundamentals,” she said. “We’re an (inexperienced) team and still building the program.”
Despite the Seahawks’ 61-14 home loss to the Christ Preparatory Patriots Tuesday night, Boese came away upbeat by her winless squad’s effort.
Bishop Seabury trailed 18-4 at the conclusion of the opening frame and 37-6 at the half. The Seahawks opened the third quarter with its best stretch in the contest, going on a 6-2 run.
After a quick basket by Christ Prep on the opening possession returning from halftime, sophomore Stella Huebner went coast to coast and nailed a layup.

Both teams traded a pair of empty possessions before Huebner pushed the action again on the offensive end of the floor. Just as she did on her previous score, Huebner brought the ball up and looked as if she planned to duplicate that same drive to the basket, rolling from the top of the key toward the right edge of paint.
But this time around, Huebner quickly rifled a pass over the top of an unsuspecting defense and into the hands of Amelia Rozzi. The freshman forward took advantage, scoring a layup before the multiple Christ Prep defenders patrolling the paint could recover.
A few possessions later, Huebner would put Rozzi in possession to score again.
On this one, Huebner delivered the ball to Rozzi on the wing. Rozzi wasted little time before driving past her defender and down the baseline. Multiple Christ Prep players met her at the basket, but Rozzi was able to draw the foul and earn a trip to the free-throw line. She knocked down both, trimming Seabury’s deficit to 39-12 with 5:23 remaining in the quarter.
But the Seahawks went cold from there, going scoreless the rest of the frame as Christ Prep took a 47-12 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Seahawks were unable to whittle the deficit in the final frame. But Boese was particularly encouraged by a defensive stop that she said encapsulates her squad’s desire to improve. During this play, junior Alice Pulsinelli set her feet as she absorbed a charge, eliciting a roar from the home crowd.
“It was our second charge of the year,” she said. “This is her second year playing. She has grown so much from last year, and I’m just so proud of her for being able to take that charge.”
Rozzi paced the Seahawks with a team-high 12 points, while knocking down 8 of 8 from the charity stripe — while Huebner contributed the team’s other two points with her third-quarter basket. For the Patriots, Ella Connors and Lia McCabe were hot from 3-point land, connecting on three 3-pointers apiece.
Working on breaking defensive pressure in the backcourt will likely be a focal point in upcoming practices, Boese said. In addition to cultivating her squad’s press breaker, Boese said that the team also needs to be more efficient offensively in the half-court set.”
“So setting up under pressure and actually scoring on offense,” she said.
The Seahawks (0-5) square off with visiting Bishop Ward on Friday.
